Jones County officially looking for athletics director
After barely a year on the job, Charles David announced in July his retirement as athletics director at Jones County.
The school is now publicly looking for his replacement, posting the job on Aug. 21 on its employment website, and listing a salary of about $113,000.
David had been the athletics director at Clifton Ridge Middle School for 23 years before being plucked in April of 2025 to take over as Jones County athletics director.
That came a little more than two months after the resignations of athletics director Chad Alligood and head football coach Mike Chastain, a few weeks after they spoke at a school board meeting defending themselves against a number of questions.
The hiring of David, brought to a close a frenetic period that began on Jan. 18 with the Facebook post of Jones County booster and former owner of part of Team Sports Jamie Huckeba, touching on how Alligood handled many aspects of fund-raising and purchasing throughout the athletics department, as well as Chastain’s firing of assistant coach Conner.
The meeting opened a can of worms that led to an investigation of Jones County Touchdown Club funds, leading in August to Chastain pleading guilty to tax evasion amid, in short, charges he used booster club funds without permission.
He repaid the $24,500. Alligood entered private business, and superintendent Charles Lundy resigned under some pressure at the end of the school year.
David has been basically a lifelong Greyhound, but posted on July 13 on his personal Facebook page that he was retiring.
“After much prayer and discussion I have decided to retire from the Jones County School System,” he wrote. “As I begin the next chapter of my life in retirement, I have so many I would like to thank.
“Serving the students, coaches, families, and community of Jones County has been one of the greatest honors of my professional career. Every game, every practice, every championship, every challenge, and every relationship has left an imprint on my heart.”
He thanked the Greyound athletes, coaches, the administration, Jones County community, and his family.
Assorted Jones County coaches are handling a variety of athletics director duties until a successor is named. The job listing has Nov. 2 as the date available to start.
The next athletics director will be Jones County’s fourth since longtime Greyhound coach and AD Barry Veal resigned in the spring of 2022 and moved to Stratford.
