Mercer sweats out East Texas A&M late rally
The Bears looked as expecte for a half, only for East Texas A&M to match it in the second half and turn the screws on the No. 17 FCS team.
A fourth-and-goal pass from the 9 with 38 seconds left. was too hard and too high, and the Bears avoided major late-game drama with a 23-15 win.
Tattnall grad Brayden Smith had 9 catches for 131 yards, while Northeast alum Travion Solomon added 3 receptions for 23 yards. Former Jones County standout Javious Bond, a transfer from Austin Peay after starting college at East Carolina, ran 4 times for 19 yards in his Mercer debut and had 2 special-teams tackles.
The Bears are back home in six days against Presbyterian at 6 p.m.
Fort Valley State 17, Elizabeth City State 14
The Wildcats scored 14 fourth-quarter points and got the game-winner on Michael Cabellero’s 6-yard TD run with 1:47 left in the game. Isaiah Carter’s interception three plays later sealed it.
Peach County grad D.J. Hudson was 14 of 25 for 112 yards, while John Milledge alum Solomon Burney caught 6 passes for 43 yards.
No. 10 GMC JC 49, No. 6 Trinity Valley CC 10
Next: Saturday, vs. Central Georgia Tech
Central Georgia Tech listed different opponents – JD Trenches Academy and Carolina Spots – yet had no information, or if the Titans played Saturday.

Henley lurking after another quality round
Russell Henley went to bed Thursday night tied for last, albeit with a respectable score.
He woke up Sunday in the hunt.
Henley lost a shot from Friday, but still picked up six spots on the leaderboard and enters the final round of the FedExCup race tied for ninth.
The Stratford grad shot a 4-under 66 on Saturday and sits 9 under with a 201 at East Lake in Atlanta.
He is locked up with Min Woo Lee, who spent some time in first, Jacob Bridgeman and Sam Burns.
They are six shots back of leader Viktor Hovland.
Henley and Lee tee off at 1:02 p.m. on Sunday, with four groups after them.
This is Henley’s fourth straight Tour Championship at East Lake, and he averages a 66. Last year, he entered Sunday tied for third after a 69.
Last year on Sunday, four shots separated five players. This year, four shots separate six, from Hovland’s 15 under to four players at 12 under.
Henley’s not in that upper group, but with his last two rounds of 65 and 66, he’s certainly capable of the jump.
Hovland, though, knows how to finish. He rocked the final round last year with a 63, his weekend disturbed by a second-round 71.
Through three rounds, only Henley, Lee, and tied-for-seventh Cameron Young are among the top 15 players who have a round outside of the 60s, Henley and Young with a 70 and Lee with a second-round 73 that dropped him into the pack that he cut seven shots off on Saturday.
Henley got off to a sour start with a bogey on No. 1, following a nice tee shot to a bunker, almost saving it but missing an 8-footer for par.
He got right back on track with three birdies in the next five holes, dropping shots of 14’6”, 6’11”, and 12’4” for the birdies.
Henley made birdie putts of 7’7” and 17 inches, reeling off a streak of seven pars on the back nine.
For the day, he was tied for second in driving accuracy (12 of 14 fairways) and greens in regulation (14 of 18), and eighth in shots gained off the tee.
His clean first round on Friday was the first time such a round has been played at East Lake since Ernie Els did it in the third round in 2002.
Through 54 holes, he has only two bogeys, against 11 birdies and 41 pars.
