The last time Macon was in the Coastal Plain League’s Pettitt Cup championship series in 2022, the Bacon lost in the division series to the Savannah Bananas.
Now, Macon is 27 outs away from a title.
Sparked by Georgia Southern players, the Bacon scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to beat Wilmington 3-2 Saturday night at Luther Williams Field in the first game of the championship series.
Carson Zagryn greeted reliever Brodie Keener with a walk on 7 pitches to open the bottom of the eighth, Nolan Richardson following with a single to left.
Logan Voelz replaced Keener, and Georgia Southern infielder Stephen Jordan moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Max Prozny (Georgia Southern) then sent a 2-2 pitch to right to easily bring in both runs for a 3-2 lead, the Bacon stranding two runners.
Jax Lewis took over for Crawford County grad Isaac Meadows on the hill for Macon to start the ninth, and the Georgia Southern lefty he got a strikeout, popup, and a game-ending strikeout to put Macon up 1-0 in the series.
Macon starter Connor McAfee survived 7 walks against only 2 strikeouts, and the Bacon got quality relief from Lawson Gailey, Meadows and Lewis.
Wilmington has the homefield advantage in the championship series despite finishing second in the East because of a higher winning percentage, 69.6-63.8.
Macon beat Savannah in 2019 for the North title, nipped Forest City in the regional final, and then ignored a 3-0 loss in the championship opener to Morehead City to win two straight for the league title.

Vine Ingle falls in Senior LLWS semi
Macon’s Vine Ingle group was an out away from extra innings, after a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth.
But the West Region took advantage of a two-out error for a walk-off 3-2 win over the Southeast in the Senior League Baseball World Series U.S. semifinal on Thursday.
The Southeast led 3-2 after five innings, but the West tied it in the sixth and won it in the seventh.
Macon opened the tournament with a 9-0 win over the Central Region, then topped the West 4-1. But East edged Macon 4-3 before the finale.
Cason Mann went 7 for 13 to lead the locals.
Last year, Vine Ingle won the Junior League Baseball World Series U.S. title, and lost in the overall World Series championship.
