Being unseeded doesn’t mean one must play that way.
Samuel Barrow certainly didn’t.
The rising junior at Stratford surrendered only two games in beating third-seeded Alejandro Moreno Latorre 6-0, 6-2 Tuesday for the boys 16 title at the USTA National Level 3 tournament at John Drew Smith Tennis Center.
In six matches, Barrow lost two sets. In his wins, only one opponent won more than three games, and he had four wins of 6-1 or better.
Barrow was ranked 14th last year in Georgia in boys 16s, the highest-ranked player from Central Georgia. Tennisrecruiting.net has Barrow ranked 229th nationally, 44th in the Southeast, and eighth in Georgia.
The win is likely to move him to around 20th in the South, and gets him into the Super Nationals in Kalamazoo, Mich., in August.
