Barrow takes first in national tennis tournament

          Stratford junior Samuel Barrow was unseeded, but didn’t play that way in winning the boys 16 division of the USTA National Level 3 tournament, taking the title Tuesday morning.

Upson-Lee’s Fagan heads up UGA hoops freshmen

          Former Upson-Lee star Tye Fagan is one of four freshmen on Georgia’s men’s basketball roster, and they’re getting some work done during the summer.

 

Speaking of UGA hoops, non-conference schedule is set

          Georgia will play a number of NCAA tournament teams in non-conference play, as well as Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State and Savannah State.

 

 

UGA’s McGee gets new title, new W-2 form figure

          Dell McGee got a promotion and raise recently, thanks to recruiting work. The third-year assistant is now assistant head coach, and $200,000 richer.

 

 

Mercer’s Schanen qualifies for U.S. Women’s Amateur

          Shooting a low score at Chateau Elan Golf Club was only part of the good news for Mercer women’s golfer Payton Schanen.

          In the process, she qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship with that 4- under 67.

          The top seven golfers qualified.

          Schanen, an all-conference selection in 2017-18, had six birdies and took first by three strokes. She was third in the Southern Conference tournament last year.

          The U.S. Women’s Amateur is in early August at the Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs, Tenn.

 

Mayhem re-sign Siemer again

          Forward John Siemer has signed with the Macon Mayhem for the third time.

          The 26-year-old will spend the third year of his three-year career in Macon, after having his best season a year ago with 20 goals and 32 assists in 56 regular-season games.

          “Siems has been here two years now, and I expect him to be a leader on this team,” head coach and director of operations Leo Thomas said in a release. “He’s a guy who can play a 200-foot game and show the younger guys how to play the right way. He has been one of our top forwards over the last two years, and I expect him to be one again this year."

          The California native also has some time n the ECHL after playing in college at Northern Michigan.

 

Honor Roll

          Mercer led the Southern Conference with 309 members of the 2017-18 academic honor roll. 

          The Bears had 80 more than No. 2, ETSU, and 33 had 4.0 GPAs. Another 86 earned the Commissioner’s Medal for a 3.8 or better.
