Thursday's Daily News 'n Notes: No Director's Cup this year (who contended?); signings (Putnam County, Northside); Jake Fromm; Falcons, and more

Wednesday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media. Updates will be noted, so check back.
No state high school Director’s Cup to be awarded
The state association for high school athletic directors will not hand out any trophies for the most successful high school athletics programs in Georgia.
The Georgia Athletics Director Association made the announcement this week with a simple banner note on its website.
The last updated standings were on March 17, through wrestling. The stoppage of the year a few days earlier meant the end of baseball, boys and girls track, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls lacrosse, and boys and girls golf.
The postseason would be in full swing entering May.
The decision affects only placement for Central Georgia programs, none of which were in contention for a Director’s Cup in their respective classification.
The best-performing area programs: No. 8 Veterans and No. 10 Jones County in 5A; No. 8 West Laurens in 4A; No. 7 Bleckley County and No. 10 Lamar County in Class AA; No. 9 GMC in Class A
Top 10 girls programs: No. 9 Jones County in 5A; No. 10 West Laurens in 4A; No. 6 Bleckley County and No. 8 Lamar County in AA; No. 10 GMC in Class A
Top 10 boys programs: No. 6 Veterans in 5A; No. 7 West Laurens in 4A.
Bleckley County’s girls finished first last year in AA, nipping Bremen by a point. The Royals have been a perennial top-10 program overall and in boys and girls.
Veterans in 5A and West Laurens in 4A have consistently been among the better overall programs in 5A, and is again.
