Westside has a new head football coach

Nearly eight months after the position became open effective at the end of the season and two months since the final game, Westside has a new football coach.

And didn’t have to go anywhere to get him.

Defensive coordinator and longtime assistant James Harris was announced Friday morning in a Bibb County athletics social media post as the successor to Spoon Risper.

Harris becomes the program’s third head coach since its first full varsity season in 1998. He follows Robert Davis (101-33 from 1997-2008) and Risper (119-72 from 2009-25).

Risper posted on May 26 that the 2025 season would be his last as Westside’s head coach.

Harris graduated from Thomson and from Albany State. He is the athletics coordinator for Weaver Middle, and thus following the same path as Risper, who was Weaver’s head football coach when he was promoted to succeed Davis.

Wind doesn’t help Henley

A breezy day handled Russell Henley – and others – in the second round of the Sony Open.

Henley dropped 37 spots after a 3-over 73 in a round with a double bogey and four bogeys to three birdies.

The Stratford grad is seven shots back of five players tied for first.
