Job filled: Jasper County snags veteran Pinkins as new head football coach
Jasper County went barely a month without a head football coach, and got one with four region titles in 13 seasons and a nifty winning percentage.
Plus some legit experience in the SEC.
The county board of education announced Dondrial Pinkins as the Hurricanes’ new coach, nearly five weeks after Ashley Henderson left for East Jackson.
Pinkins takes over a program with the momentum of playoff wins the past two seasons and its first 10-win season since 1992. Jasper County improved every year under Henderson, who took over after an 0-10 season and won four, five, eight, and 10 games I the next four seasons.
Pinkins was a star at Mitchell-Baker, graduating in 2000 and going on to South Carolina, where he played under Lou Holtz.
Pinkins’ teams have made the playoffs 11 times in his 13 seasons as a head coach at Mitchell County twice and Pelham, winning a game six times. Pelham reached the Class A semifinals in 2018-19, going 23-3 in those two seasons.
He started out at Mitchell County in 2009, going 19-13 in three seasons. Pinkins was an assistant at Valdosta and Thomasville, preceding six seasons, four region titles, and a 53-15 record at Pelham.
Pinkins returned to Mitchell County in 2021, after going 6-2 at Pelham in the COVID-19 season.
Mitchell County went 5-5 in 2025, losing 36-30 to Warren County in the first round of the playoffs. The Eagles had two losing seasons under Pinkins in his second stint, 5-6 in 2022 and 2-8 in 2023.
He was released by Mitchell County in early January, the school deciding to go “in a different direction.” It hired Kaream Hess – who went 4-16 in two seasons at Montgomery County – in late January.
Upson-Lee among teams fined for score-reporting snafus
Three high school teams’ failure to adequately report scores that led to re-working of the GHSA Postseason Rankings are paying again.
Upson-Lee paid first by losing its Class AAA boys playoff spot, wile Westside-Augusta and Hephzibah paid by dropping in the rankings, changing their seeds and opponents.
Now, the GHSA is fining the three $2,000 each for the errors, which forced the group to re-seed on the Sunday before the state tournament started.
The GHSA relies in part on scores posted by teams to MaxPreps, and when it found out that scores were missing, it had to rework the playoff brackets.
