Maybe it’s been time before, maybe not. But there is new blood in the Division I rankings for the first time in – scratches head, chooses not to research –in awhile.
West Laurens cracks the top 5, nudging Perry to the fringe, along with Mary Persons and Upson-Lee.
The Raiders are combining speed and defense to 5-0, finding ways to win close games as well as ways to avoid close games.
Granted, they’re going to have to get a passing game going to keep this up, but they’re clicking mighty well out of their version of the single-wing. And, as everybody knows, defense travels.
Had Upson-Lee’s pass defense been playing pass defense on the final play last week against Whitewater, the Knights would have an argument for that fifth spot.
There’s some shuffling in Division II, and there’s not much of a gap among the top five teams, or maybe No. 4 through No. 8.
Nobody’s running away with anything, and we’ll have movement this week, with the likes of Dublin-Northeast, Hawkinsville-Wheeler County, and Stratford-John Milledge.
We’re getting to the point, too, where a team or two at or just below .500 can make a case for one or two spots.
