Class 6A

Houston County, 3-3/1-1, at No. 6 Coffee, 5-1/1-1
Two head coaches with similar records battle, while the teams have a gap. Houston County’s Jeremy Edwards is 40-16 while Coffee’s Mike Coe is 45-14. The two have split in their meetings, but the Bears have lost eight of the last 10 meetings. The Trojans are outscoring opponents by 24 points a game, 20 more than the Bears, whose Austin Stinson is among the state rushing leaders with 1,387 yards.

Editor’s note: Thanks to FPD, John Milledge, and Dublin for sending game information Friday night to The Central Georgia Sports Report., and Perry on Saturday.

No. 3 Lee County, 6-2/2-1, at Northside, 3-3/1-1
The scores of the last three meetings haven’t been remotely pleasant for the Eagles: 56-7, 55-7, 54-12. Lee County has scored only 50 points once this year, but is off a 49-0 win over Veterans. Northside quarterback Keirion Tate is 11 yards from 1,000 passing.

Class 4A

No. 13 Howard, 4-2/3-0, at Mo. 10 Mary Persons, 3-3/1-2
Mary Persons goes for its 350th win at Dan Pitts Stadium while Howard tries to break an 8-game losing streak against the Bulldogs. Mary Persons has a quality air attack, with Mason Stephens among the top 4A targets with 445 yards, and Howard counters with Florida State commit Ta’Shawn Poole in the secondary.

West Laurens, 3-4/2-1, at Long County, 1-5/0-2

The Raiders’ search for consistency and an ability to finish continues. Three losses have been by 6, 8, and 3. Long County may be better than 1-5, with one loss a season-opening forfeit and three losses by 10, 3, and 14.

Class 3A
Thomson, 2-4/1-1, at Washington County, 3-4/2-1
A 48-minute battle awaits with a pair of teams perhaps a little better than their record. Thomson has lost three by 7, 1, and 7, while putting up 42 and 49 in wins. Washington County has a 3-point and 7-point loss, plus an 81-0 win.

Class AA
No. 3 Dublin, 5-1/2-0, at ACE, 5-2/1-2
The Irish bring another deep backfield with multiple big-play, big-game threats into the equation. Jamarcus Knight leads the way with 101.2 yards a game and 11.9 yards a carry, but QB Ryland Yates has a team-high 5 rushing TDs. Knight leads a steady Dublin D with 7 tackles a game and 6 tackles for loss. That unit will go hard at ACE quarterback Ace Hatcher gets 116.2 yards a  game (based on 6-game stats reported to MaxPreps) and has 9 rushing touchdowns. ACE hopes to avoid a 3-game losing streak for the second straight year and get its first win over Dublin in 3 tries.

No. 6 Bleckley County, 6-2/2-1, at No. 12T Dodge County, 4-2/2-0
These two have a half a century of a rivalry going, Dodge County holding a 34-16 lead. The Indians have won the last two, 31-29 and 19-16, after a 5-game Royals winning streak. In the last 10 games, only three times has the margin been double figures, the last a 33-6 Bleckley County win in 2022. Odds are against either team pulling off that big a win, with two balanced offenses and only two points being the difference in each having one loss. Pass defense will be the key against two quarterbacks throwing for almost 200 yards a game. Bleckley County’s Brody Fleming is among the top three in AA with 1,421 yards, while Kain Mincey has 1,196.

East Laurens, 2-5/1-2, at Vidalia, 2-4/0-2
Vidalia brings a 20-8 series lead and four straight wins over East Laurens – the series has been quiet since the Indians’ 50-21 win in 2021 – which followed a big win over ACE with a 28-point loss to Dodge County, which beat Vidalia – on a 2-game losing streak – by 25.

Class A

GMC Prep, 3-3/0-2, at Hancock Central, 1-5/0-2
GMC is struggling on offense after a 20-0 loss to Jenkins County and 14-12 defeat by Wilkinson County, but has been playing steady defense. Hancock Central, which leads the series 10-6, is struggling in all phases, being outscored by 29.5 points a game.

Marion County, 3-4/3-0, at No. 5 Macon County, 5-1/1-1
The Bulldogs welcome a fairly warm team on a 3-game winning streak after starting 0-4. Macon County is outscoring opponents by 20.8 points while Marion County has a 6.1-point edge. Macon County’s Noah Parker is 63 yards from 1,000. Marion County and Schley County are the lone teams with perfect 6-A records, but Marion County’s 3 wins are against teams a combined 7-13.

No. 4 Taylor County, 5-1/1-1, at Central-Talbotton, 3-3/0-2
Taylor County’s starters are likely to get a little more rest than usual against a team that has scored only 49 points in the last 10 meetings with the Vikings, who lead the series 35-7.  QB Lelend Holder is completing 65.7 percent of his passes for 1,270 yards, 12 touchdowns and no picks. Adrian Chatman and Alec Rubio lead a defense that’s allowed more than 20 points only once, in the 21-20 loss to Macon County.

Jenkins County, 2-4/2-0, at Twiggs County, 1-6/0-3
The Cobras have been shut out in 3 straight and 4 overall. Jenkins County has only one shutout, of GMC Prep. The teams haven’t played since 2003’s 49-0 Twiggs County win.

Glascock County, 3-4/2-1, at Wilkinson County, 3-4/2-1
The Warriors have a 4-0 series lead, with Glascock County stinging from last year’s 56-32 loss. Stats are close, so a 48-minute game awaits.

🏈🏈 GIAA 🏈🏈

Westfield, 4-3/1-0, at CFCA, 0-7/0-2
The Lancers search for the first win gets no easier against the bigger and deeper Hornets, who had a week off after beating Tiftarea by 20 to break a 2-game losing streak. Westfield leads the series 6-0, taking a 49-13 win in the last meeting, in 2018. QB Brock Johnson has 1,268 passing yards and a team-high 459 on the ground for Westfield.

Tattnall Square, 4-4/1-1, at FPD, 4-4/0-2
The Vikings have won four straight in the series, with three close games followed by 31-6 last year. The Trojans have scored the same number of points they’ve allowed, 202. Both are huge improvements over last year. Angelo Bellamy is an up-and-comer at quarterback, the Tattnall freshman completing 56.1 percent of his passes for 1,034 yards, with 10 touchdowns and 8 interceptions, and he’s spreading it around. FPD, which hasn’t updated stats, is amid its first 3-game losing streak under fourth-year head coach Brett Collier.

Mount de Sales, 5-3/0-2, at John Milledge, 8-0/2-0
The series – led 15-14 by John Milledge - took almost a decade off, but little changed. John Milledge has won seven straight since 2011, with only two margins below 20 points. MdS QB Benjamin Burney is 40 yards from passing for 1,000. John Milledge doesn’t have anybody that close yet, but the running trio of Jamel Cooper, Asa Wall, and Cayden Wingifield are good for 1,719 yards and 27 rushing touchdowns.

Brentwood, 5-3/2-1, at Briarwood, 8-0/3-0
The War Eagles lost a region battle by 1 in OT last week, so they’d like to hand Briarwood its first region loss, and loss of the season. Brentwood leads the series 27-15-1, and has won the last two 42-14, and 49-20. Brentwood faces a quarterback getting 218.9 yards a game and an offense good for almost 100 more yards a game. Brentwood has been in more four-quarter games and is 2-2 on the road.

Flint River, 3-3/0-3, at Trinity Christian, 2-5/0-2
Flint River is on a rare 2-game losing streak, and is 3-9 against Trinity Christian. The teams haven’t played since Trinity Christian’s 30-27 win in 2013. Head coaches Mark Wilson of Flint River (and formerly of Taylor County and Lamar County) 174-183-1 and Bruce Lane of Trnity Christian (and formerly of Westfield, John Milledge, GMC Prep, and Monroe Academy), 213-141-1 have combined for 387 wins and 324 losses.

Piedmont, 2-5/1-0, at Windsor, 6-1/2-0
The Knights are rolling, having cracked 30 points in five straight games while holding six opponents in a row to less than 20 points. Last year, 9 of 12 opponents passed the 20-point mark, five cracking 30 points. JaQuan Lewis has 725 yards and 8 rushing touchdowns for the Knights.
